Don Kirchenberg 4 Forest Preserve Commissioner

Thank you to the voters
of the 4th District of DuPage County!

Press Release For Immediate Release February 2, 2010

Don Kirchenberg, candidate for the position of Commissioner of the DuPage County Forest Preserve District serving District 4 would like to thank the voters for their support in today’s primary election. Kirchenberg stated “To receive a single vote is nice but to get thousands of the votes in my first campaign is very flattering. I also wish to thank everyone that supported my candidacy with their donations, literature distribution and of course votes.”

“As an experienced, dedicated and independent environmentalist, I have worked hard for many years in DuPage County, as a volunteer, to protect our environment including the forest preserves. I was encouraged by many to run for the position of Forest Preserve Commissioner. It was very nice to get the additional encouragement during the campaign.”

He continues “This is an important election because we need to make changes to how the Forest Preserve District of DuPage County operates. I encourage all candidates and Commissioners to improve communication with evening meetings and the broadcasting of all meetings on the web and cable TV. In addition, I hope they will oppose the building of any new maintenance facilities in the forest preserves including the Blackwell Forest Preserve. I also hope that the Forest Preserve District Commissioners will reverse their vote giving away 3 acres of forest preserve land for the Navistar heavy industrial diesel engine testing complex.”

“In conclusion I hope all the candidates will adopt a pledge to not accept gifts or campaign contributions from employees of the Forest Preserve District of DuPage County or companies that do business with the FPD of DuPage County. We need to eliminate the practice of having contractors give donations to the elected officials at all levels of government that vote to give them contracts.”

Endorsement of Don Kirchenberg by

Dear Neighbor

I became acquainted with Don Kirchenberg in 2009 after Commonwealth Edison and their contractor Asplundh came through our communities chopping the tops off trees instead of trimming them. He asked for my support in getting healthier trimming of the trees. After seeing the extensive damage of the trees by Com Ed and Asplundh which killed over 3,000 on our trails alone I agreed to work with Don and the many trail supporters to protect trees on the trails and along private property.

In the past year I have learned about Don’s passion and hard work as a volunteer and leader in leading the fight to protect our trees and trails. He has achieved a lot in his work that was one of the principal reasons why Com Ed, the IL Commerce Commission had to respond directly to consumers at the first ever public forum held on 1/12/10.

He is devoted and has continued to fight the good fight to protect our environment.  In his work as a volunteer he has accomplished many goals. For example:
 ·         Since 2000 Don lead numerous teams of volunteers to clean up the trash along the trails including the Great Western Trail.  This has improved our trails natural beauty and reduced the maintenance costs for the taxpayers.
 ·         He has exhibited leadership with his efforts to reduce or eliminate the inappropriate cutting of trees on the trails including the Great Western Trail. This cutting of trees has lead to diminished natural habitat and the loss of attractive trail areas.
 ·         As a volunteer he has worked hard to help myself and the other 2 Democratic DuPage County members with excellent ideas and support to promote and implement good government practices.

I believe Don deserves our support and votes because he will bring his experiences of working with many different individuals and groups to change how the Forest Preserve District operates. His experience with different jobs will provide insights to help set policy for the Forest Preserve District.
He has the experience, the leadership, and the dedication that is needed at this time.

I am asking for your support and vote for Don Kirchenberg for the position of Forest Preserve Commissioner serving District 4 in the upcoming Democratic primary election on Tuesday, 2/2/2010 (or you can vote early now). Please note Don has a challenger in the primary so to be eligible for the general election in November, 2010 he needs to win the Democratic primary.

ENDORSEMENT by the Daily Herald Newspaper 1/24/10

For DuPage County Forest Preserve District 4, Democratic: Kirchenberg

A pair of relative newcomers to the political scene - Eric Bergman and Donald Kirchenberg - are seeking the Democratic endorsement in the Feb. 2 primary for a four-year term in DuPage Forest Preserve District 4. Both have roots in green initiatives in DuPage - Bergman fought the removal of trees in Glen Ellyn's Ackerman Park and Kirchenberg is a longtime Illinois Prairie Path board member - and appear committed to the preservation and protection of open space. Both are correct when they say the commission must improve its communication with residents, especially in the wake of disputes over the placement of a maintenance facility in Blackwell Forest Preserve and the debate over the Navistar site in Lisle.

While both would bring a fresh perspective, we endorse Kirchenberg because he has been active considerably longer than his opponent and because we think he could function better as a political outsider on the GOP-dominated commission.

Endorsement from Dirk Enger, Member DuPage County Board,

For Immediate Release
January 22, 2010

Today I am strongly endorsing Don Kirchenberg for the position of Commissioner of the Forest Preserve District to serve District # 4. Don has consistently shown throughout many years, his commitment to preserving and protecting our forest preserves and other environmental issues. The residents of DuPage County are very fortunate to have someone of Don’s level of proven leadership and commitment step up and represent all in DuPage County. Don Kirchenberg unlike other candidates has always stood up proudly and with conviction and commitment to insure nature and all our preserve lands are protected. I can honestly say and many others would agree Don is one of the few I have met that is truly dedicated to preserving and improving our open space. And he will insure accountability and leadership by example when elected. Don Kirchenberg has shown this through years of sacrifice on many different issues.

The sitting board does respect Don but more importantly, they know when Don is elected true transparency and responsibility will be back in the hands of the residents of DuPage County. I am proud to be able to endorse an outstanding and well proven leader. I know firsthand, for you see I have had the honor and pleasure to stand with him on many issues.

He has never given up on any Issue and truly does wear his heart on his sleeve when he says you have my word. Thank you Don Kirchenberg for all that you have done for the residents of DuPage County, and if given the chance will do even more when elected.

The people of DuPage County gave me the privilege and chance to represent them the last election. I hope from one whose district (#6) has more green space (Forest Preserve land) than any other district that the voters send a message to this board; these lands belong to the residents of DuPage.

ELECT DON KIRCHENBERG ONE VOICE FOR ALL.

Sincerely
Dirk Enger
DuPage County Board Dist. #6

January 9, 2010

Dear Neighbor

Don Kirchenberg has lead the Friends of the Great Western Trails as Chairman since the group was started in 2000 and he is a devoted environmentalist.
·
He has exhibited leadership with his efforts annually to lead numerous teams of volunteers to clean up the trash along the trails including the Great Western Trail.  This has reduced the maintenance costs for DuPage County, the Forest Preserve District and Commonwealth Edison.
·
He has exhibited leadership with his efforts to reduce or eliminate the inappropriate use of chemicals by Commonwealth Edison or their contractors.  These chemicals have been used to eliminate some trees and trail vegetation.  He and others have worked to eliminate the use of these chemicals in-part to protect the natural and the human environment.
·
He has exhibited leadership with his efforts to reduce or eliminate the inappropriate cutting of trees on the trails including the Great Western Trail. This cutting of trees has lead to diminished natural habitat, the elimination of mature trees, the reduction of screening and the loss of attractive views.

Don Kirchenberg is dedicated to representing the people of District 4. He will bring his experiences of working with many different individuals and groups to reach a successful conclusion.  He will hold down costs and promote the environment.  His experience with different jobs will provide insights to help set policy for the FPD.

He has the experience, the leadership, and the dedication that is needed at this time.

I ask for your support and vote for Don Kirchenberg for the position of Forest Preserve Commissioner serving District 4 in the upcoming Democratic primary election on Tuesday, 2/2/2010 (or you can vote early now).

DuPage Captures Kame

While “Special 8” may sound more like a cereal than property, a triangular 8.3-acre parcel by that name in Glen Ellyn, Illinois, is actually a remnant with a 30-foot-long kame, a rare glacial hill. The Forest Preserve District of DuPage County purchased the property in December.

The kame, called Glacial Ridge, was once part of a system that sprawled hundreds of acres across the landscape. Farming and development wore much of this topography flat, but Glacial Ridge, tucked away between the Union Pacific Railroad tracks and the Chicago, Aurora, and Elgin Railway (now the Illinois Prairie Path), escaped major destruction. Illinois Prairie Path President Don Kirchenberg spearheaded the movement to save the kame. He points out that it is adjacent to an unbroken one-mile stretch of the Prairie Path that is a favorite of bike riders.

Plant specialists Marlin Bowles and Pat Armstrong confirmed the site’s ecological significance. Its lower reaches are mostly oak woodland, with oaks, aspen, and hazelnut. The top of the kame is prairie, with dry gravel soil that supports more than 100 native plants, including wild hyacinth and pale vetchling, a threatened species in Illinois.

In 2002, Gayle Homes purchased the property and proposed the construction of family homes or townhouses. While the builders maintained that construction would not harm the kame, it would have required extending Whittier Avenue across the Prairie Path. The Forest Preserve District also sought the property and filed condemnation papers against the owners. Though the owners initially sought as much as one million dollars, they settled for $375,000. The Village of Glen Ellyn may agree to manage the site.

THANK YOU AGAIN to all the volunteers including trail users and neighbors that supported this incredible grass roots campaign to protect an important parcel of land and stop a street crossing on the IL Prairie Path between Hill Rd. and Montclare Ave. in Glen Ellyn, IL.

Thanks to your efforts of sending thousands of emails, attending many meetings and a $10,000 donation from The Illinois Prairie Path not for profit organization the "Special 8" is now the Glacial Ridge Forest Preserve part of the Forest Preserve District of DuPage County.

Statement read to the FPD of DC President and Commissioners at their special meeting about the Blackwell Forest Preserve.
STOP the blacktopping of the
Blackwell Forest Preserve in DuPage County

 July 20, 2009
Dear President Pierotti and Commissioners of the Forest Preserve District of DuPage County:
I am concerned with the proposed use of forest preserve land for the new vehicle
maintenance facility for the Forest Preserve District. It just seems so practical to
not take forest preserve land which is limited and instead place a vehicle maintenance
garage and complex in an industrial or commercial setting. And you have a more
sustainable option with the many different now empty car/truck dealers in DuPage
County. I think it is a safe bet that they are not going to be car/truck dealerships and
maintenance facilities for any new car or truck companies ever again.
So I am asking the forest preserve district to save the little land we have as open
space and be more sustainable in your operations by converting an abandoned car/truck
dealership along Roosevelt Road or many other spots. Unfortunately there are many to
choose from.

Statement by Don Kirchenberg to the Commissioners and President of the
Forest Preserve District of DuPage County at their meeting on 12/1/09
__________________________________________________________
Two weeks ago at the meeting of the Forest Preserve District of
DuPage County (FPD of DC) on November 17th there was a
big commotion made about how one government official
may have insulted another.

Much to do was made about an email from a bureaucrat
from Lisle talking about the FPD of DC’s President Pierotti.
A letter was issued by the FPD of DC to the Village of Lisle
about the matter.
And apologies have been demanded by the FPD of DC
about this email.

While this excitement goes on the FPD of DC has still
agreed to give away (sell to the Village of Lisle to give
to Navistar) 3 acres of one of our forest preserves – Danada
for Navistar’s proposed heavy industrial diesel engine
testing complex.

You folks (the Commissioners and President Pierotti) approved
the Navistar complex by voting unanimously in September to
give away these 3 acres.
Giving away 3 acres of a forest preserve is a serious matter.
Giving away 3 acres of our forest preserves for a heavy industrial
diesel engine testing complex is shameful. The Commissioners
and President Pierotti now say they did not know what the Navistar
project entailed. All you had to do is ask.

You did not ask any questions before giving away 3 acres of
our forest preserves.
We should get an apology from the
Commissioners and President Pierotti for that unanimous vote.
But you can skip the apology and revote this matter. Knowing
now what the Navistar complex entails and the environmental
dangers with it you should reverse your vote now and stop it.

Statement made during public comment to the
Forest Preserve District of DuPage County
Commissioners and President Pierotti

The Forest Preserve District of DuPage County has taken an important step today to attempt to cancel the Intergovernmental Agreement with DuPage County and the Village of Lisle regarding the proposal to give away (sell to the Village of Lisle to give away to Navistar) forest preserve land for Navistar's heavy industrial diesel engine testing complex.

Today's vote underscores the fact that the Commissioners of the Forest Preserve District of DuPage County needs to ask questions in the future whenever there are changes planned or requests to give away forest preserve land. And we need the Commissioners and President of the FPD of DC to see this through to be sure we do not have this dangerous facility and its 24 hour operations of the polluting testing of dozens of diesel engines in our community.

I would ask everyone to contact their Forest Preserve Commissioners and President Pierotti to tell them never again should they vote blindly to give away our forest preserve land.

Why are DuPage County
& the Village of Lisle
Sacrificing Our Environment,
Health & Safety
?
We oppose Navistar’s  Heavy Industrial Diesel Truck
and Engine Testing Facility &  Fuel Storage
Tank Farm proposed for part
of the Danada Forest Preserve next to the
Alcatel -Lucent Office Campus in Lisle, IL.

We oppose the detrimental impacts to the environment
from Diesel Exhaust emissions into the air & water.

Navistar will burn about 20,000 gallons of conventional diesel
24/7 every week in a new 335,000sf engine testing plant about
the size of two IKEA stores. DuPage is already an EPA
designated poor air quality area & Navistar’s proposal will only
make the air quality worse. Diesel exhaust and fine particulate matter
are known carcinogens. There are thousands of medical research
reports that all confirm the serious health and mortality risks due
to exposure to diesel exhaust. Can Navistar meet the even stricter
Federal Clean Air Act requirements? They have not submitted an
Environmental Impact Statement. Why not?

We oppose the demolition and disposal of over 350 beautiful
mature trees
on the NE quadrant of the Lucent Campus right next to
the Danada Forest Preserve.

We oppose the sale of 3 acres of Forest Preserve property to
Navistar’s so they can destroy the environment.

We oppose granting numerous zoning variances and departures
from standards for the proposed 335,000sf industrial facility
on the Lucent Campus
. The approximately 88-acre Lucent Office
Campus is the “Jewel” of the I-88 E-W Tech Corridor. It was never
intended for this type of development. This industrial use will destroy
the image of the corridor and set a new precedence on the type of
all future use in the area. Navistar’s plans are not compatible with
adjacent recreational and residential land uses.

Statement during public comment to the Village Board of the Village of Lisle, IL
about their plans to spend $500,000 of taxpayer’s money for Navistar’s proposed
heavy industrial diesel engine testing complex.

My name is Don Kirchenberg. I have been a resident of DuPage County for over 20 years.
I am here tonight to speak about the proposed plan to take away part of our forest preserves.
I believe the proposal by the Village of Lisle to giveaway 3 acres of our forest preserves for
Navistar’s heavy industrial diesel engine testing complex is a bad idea.

Giving away any of our forest preserves is a serious matter and must be given careful
consideration. Giving away forest preserve land for a heavy industrial diesel engine testing
complex and the storage of 162,000 gallons of fuel next to our Danada forest preserve, homes
for thousands of people and the brand new school for children with autism is shameful.

Why does the Village of Lisle want to proceed with this plan especially when Navistar is
stating they will be submitting a revised plan next month? Does the Village of Lisle already
know what the revised Navistar plan is going to be? Why vote on giving away our forest
preserve land when the environmental analysis of Navistar’s plan has not been completed?

Please wait to vote on the Navistar plan and giving away our forest preserve land
until we all know more about the plan and its impact to the environment.

PRESS RELEASE
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE 12/08/09

Members of the DuPage County Board Rita Gonzalez District 1, Dirk Enge
District 6 and Tony Michelassi District 5 have issued a statement about
Commonwealth Edison - Com Ed backing out of their agreement with DuPage
County. In a combined statement from Gonzalez, Enger and Michelassi “We need
Com Ed and its contractor Asplundh to agree to trim the trees everywhere including
on the trails in a healthy manner.”
“We were advised by DuPage County Board member Jeff Redick (Chairman of DuPage
County's Environmental Committee) in a press release that Com Ed has backed out of
replanting of trees (they killed over 3,000 trees on the trails in early 2009) and they will
not agree with any efforts to develop a healthy tree trimming standard.” states Gonzalez,
Enger and Michelassi.

The 3 board members continue to say “the fact that Com Ed has failed to agree to any
healthy trimming of the trees and continues to refuse to answer questions from trail user
groups continues to disappoint us. We would suggest that we need the IL Commerce
Commission - ICC and our representatives in IL government to take action and support
the
efforts of trail users, trail neighbors and cities like Wheaton and West Chicago to require
Com Ed to trim trees in a healthy manner and set that standard. “

Gonzalez, Enger and Michelassi conclude “We agree with DuPage County Board members
Redick, John Zediker and Jim Healy when they say we need all our representatives at the
state level to act because Com Ed is damaging the environment and believe they are above
the law and any agencies that should be regulating them. And we welcome those 3 in joining
our ongoing efforts to protect the trees, trails and trail users including the wildlife. We also
encourage all supporters of the trails and trees everywhere to contact their representatives
and the ICC about Com Ed’s butchering of the trees everywhere along with plans to clear cut
and spray herbicides along our trails.”
Citizens interested in getting the state government including the ICC to make Com Ed trim
the  trees in a healthy manner everywhere including on our trails are encouraged to contact
